Vladimir Ushakov is a theater director with over 35 years of experience, whose career spans the creation of independent theater ecosystems, leading major cultural institutions, and implementing international projects within the EU. His creative method is based on the theater of the paradox, a synthesis of psychologism, grotesque, and a sharp social focus, making each of his productions a relevant artistic statement.
A key milestone in his biography was the founding and leadership of the Contemporary Art Theater (SHT) in Minsk (2004–2021). SHT became the first and most successful private theater in the history of modern Belarus, operating as a fully independent structure for 17 years. Under Vladimir's leadership, more than 50 large-scale productions were staged, ranging from socio-philosophical dramas (E. Schwartz's "The Dragon," B. Brecht's "A Respectable Wedding") to modern adaptations of classics (T. Tolstaya's "The Slynx," William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night").
Since 2022, Vladimir has been actively integrated into the European cultural context. He is a member of the international Artists at Risk (AR) program and a fellow of the Finnish Cultural Foundation. His recent European works include the production of "Winter Under the Table" (Teatteri Helsinki 98, 2025), the project "Order of the White Mouse" in Warsaw (2024), and radio plays for YLE Radio Theatre in Finland.
At Baltas Teatras, Vladimir Ushakov serves as a guest director. In March 2026, the high-profile premiere of his comedy "Everything is Upside Down" (orig. "Dom vverh dnom") took place in Vilnius.
